My cut of the film had Michelle (Bai Ling) walking down a dead marketplace as she calmly looks for
groceries to buy back home. It also gives us a look at the world and it's condition that it's in. She
finally stops and choose some groceries and proceeds to buy some food. But just as she is about to
pay for it, she decides she was going to give a little bit more for the store owner's dying son.
Coming back home, she walks past a couple (same guy Alec Newman was operating on) and she
gets the rare glimpse of somebody happy and normal in this god forsaken town.

The section was cut out in the final cut of the film when sales agents and producers agreed that it
taking away from the fast paced action film. Of course, my argument would be that it gives us some
time to see the human away from the Assassin, but they felt there were already other parts in the
film that does that and that the opening credit sequence was dragging the film out.
Giving the store owners more money was actually Bai Ling's idea. She and I were both bummed
out about it being taken off. It was a beautiful scene. We set the marketplace up at a parking lot
and shot it within half a day. There was an empty car if you could see that we used the engine
as a gas stove to cook food. Very fun to production design the heck out of it.
The way the credits came out was my little homage to Ghost in the Shell but thought I'd have it
in a different context so it doesn't feel like I'm ripping it off. The music in this was extremely
beautiful as well. Melissa Kaplan did a great job going from a Bulgarian to Chinese singer.
Honored to have her on the sound score. |
