The film originally ended with Bai Ling finally walking away and the city blowing up. The original
story was that the city was about to be blown to smitherins to make way for a new city to be built.
A selection process begins, hence causing a rise in the activity of DNA Hacking which also leads
to the government hiring private assassins to reduce the numbers of 'illegal immigrants'. Click here

Because 45 mins of the film needed to be cut, this part of the story was completely re-edited out.
So, the ending had to be changed, otherwise we would be wondering why the city was exploding
out of nowhere.

Cutting is a very funny process. You can't just clip one thing to reduce the time, you have to realize
the implications of cutting a scene as that might make continuity and story inconsistent throughout.
The story that was cut out was really my exploration of illegal immigration and how much people
are willing to go through to 'survive'. But are they bad? Are they to blame for any failing economy?
This was an interesting way for me to explore this subject through this film.

I could probably make a whole other film based on what we cut out. But the producers made the
best decision they could for what they had to work with. As bummed out as I am, I still am proud
of what the producers did with the final product and they have my full support on everything. I
suppose everything is a compromise, but one thing I am (to the producers) is extremely grateful
for giving me the chance to make a film.
