In 1888, Hiram Wells is the sheriff of a dying western town. The train doesn’t stop there anymore
and the post office is almost defunct. A recent widower in his thirties, Hiram is still grieving along
with his three children: Lucinda, a hormonal teen; Caleb, a twelve-year old obsessed with the
macabre stories of penny dreadful serials; Ellie, an excitable six year old. While Lucinda yearns
for her father to move the family on to greater civilization, Hiram hesitates to leave the place where
he buried his wife. Soon a troop of actors arrives to entertain the few residents of the town and
bring more excitement than anyone bargained for. Lead by a seductive man named Cage Edwards,
the troop makes itself at home. As Lucinda grows infatuated with August, a young man in the
troop, Hiram thinks he only has his hands full dealing with the lovebirds, but soon the remaining townspeople begin to vanish. Upon investigating the disappearances, Hiram discovers the troop’s
true nature; they are a band of vampires that has been picking off the last residents of the west’s dwindling towns before moving on. As Hiram becomes entangled in the conflict, he finds himself infected and slowly turning into a blood-thirsty revenant. In a race to save himself and his family,
he must also stop Lucinda from joining August in undeath. Ironically, he discovers that the pulp literature of his son’s penny dreadfuls may hold the answer to defeating this supernatural threat.
